BTW, I want to help you. If you’re having an event coming up, I am having a kickass webinar today for CharityHowto. It’s all about how to get sponsorships. If you didn’t make it, we’re having another one in June. You might want to get on that.

Okay, enough of ME offering to help you! Here’s how other people can help you!

Have you ever wanted to get MORE done every day?

Have you ever been frustrated with how little it seems like you can accomplish in your office?

Have you ever just been totally stuck with everything you have to do, and wondering, “HOW can I become 5 people so I can get all of my work done?”

I have a host of resources for you!

Idealist.org

Idealist.org

It’s for more than just jobs! It looks like they have a blog now as well, and possibly, if you post a volunteer request there, people will come and volunteer for you.

VolunteerMatch

Volunteermatch.org
Volunteermatch is an excellent source of volunteers. Do you need an extra pair of hands at your big event? Perhaps volunteermatch can help you.

HandsOn
Another volunteering site!

Sparked.com

The Extraordinaires have turned into: http://www.sparked.com/.
Go there! Microvolunteering opportunities! Maybe you need a lawyer to look over a legal document. Maybe you need someone to edit your appeal letter and make it better. Check them out. It’s virtual volunteering at its best.

One thing I’ve noticed though, is that sometimes volunteers can’t always do what you need them to do, to your standards.

I’m thinking of one cringe-worthy day when I had people from a company come to volunteer at my nonprofit and I got together phone-a-thon resources and thought that everyone knew that we needed them to come and do a phone-a-thon and they got there and 90% of the people said, “Oh hey, I don’t want to do fundraising, I just want to, you know, do some clean-up tasks or something.” So then I had to scramble to find things for them to do while simultaneously trying to direct the phone-a-thon. It was a MESS. They left in a huff after doing some random tasks. I stayed and finished the phone-a-thon with the 2 volunteers I had left. It was better than nothing. We got a few thousand dollars that day.

So, if you have a little bit of money, may I suggest “Fancy Hands”?

I love Fancy Hands

Fancy Hands is Ted Roden’s new company. It will take $35 per month and do 15 tasks for you. They must be virtual tasks, they can’t be stuff like “Go pick up my drycleaning” (which is just as well, because I don’t DO drycleaning.) But for example, I asked them to research some things for me, and they GOT ON IT, and DID IT! It was incredible.

If you want unlimited tasks, it’s $55/month. Pretty sweet.

And before you say, “Oh, they must outsource all of their tasks to India,” let me tell you, no, actually, everyone I’ve talked with has been in America, and they are all very nice, and all write English perfectly. So, it’s helping to employ people in America, while at the same time getting things done for your nonprofit, at a higher standard than a volunteer might be able to do!

So they’re not paying me to say this or anything, I am just so happy with their service that I thought I would share.

Also, I’ve used Ted Roden’s service http://enjoysthin.gs for awhile, and I really like it, and now I like his new project too! he’s always doing fun things to help people.

Oh yeah, PS! Another little fun thing that my friend Cait Stuff turned me on to is http://750words.com. It’s a place to help you write, and it has cute little graphics that track your mood and what you write about, but you have total privacy, it doesn’t share your writing with anyone. It’s like doing the artist’s way, with more details, and it reminds you to write every day too! So this is a place to help you do your journaling. Which is part of self-care, remember! Take care of yourself! Get help! Have fun!

This is about utilizing Lean Manufacturing processes to get the fundraising tasks you need to do done in the shortest amount of time, always improving, and always looking for ways to do it more efficiently.

Are you intrigued? Yes?

Then come to my presentation at the Center for Nonprofit Organizations on March 8th from 9:30am to 12pm.

We’ll go into what lean is, where it comes from, why it works, who is using it right now in the fundraising world, and what sort of success they’re having with it, and how you can apply it to your fundraising office. I’ve personally used these processes and found how incredibly helpful they can be for the one-person shop.

You’ll come away with concrete actions you can take in your fundraising office, and quick guides for lean appeals, lean grants, and more.

This month my post was featured on the NetSquared Blog!

I also had a full page article in Special Events Galore! October edition, a subscription based newsletter.

And finally, I had a post on Sharp Skirts about The Power of Free.

So, thank you NetSquared, Sharp Skirts and Special Events Galore so much for these opportunities!

Here is how you can find volunteers.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of your organization. Your board are volunteers, and they are responsible for the oversight of everyone at your nonprofit or charity.

Volunteers are also there for you when you need to do an appeal mailing, when you’re stuck with one hundred phonecalls you need to do for a phone-a-thon, when you need someone to do grant research for you, or pro-bono graphic design, when you’re tired and just want to go home.

Volunteers are so wonderful. And they save your organization $18 for every hour they’re there.

So where do you find these wonderful, mythical creatures?

1. Your donor database. Is there anyone in there, a loyal donor, who could be engaged as a volunteer?

2. Volunteermatch.org. You can post volunteer opportunities on here, and it’s a wonderful place to get volunteers.

3. Local faithbased organizations. Many faithbased organizations give a donation to a nonprofit each month. If you already have such an organization, why not ask if you can go speak to their group and ask for volunteers? There are tons of people in these organizations who love to help others. Give them a compelling story, and mention how you want to offer a fun gardening opportunity for them (for example).

4. The Extraordinaires. This is so fun. This website helps you connect with volunteers that may have 15 minutes or 1 hour to help you, but they can be anywhere in the world. So if you have a legal document that you need a lawyer to look over, you can start a volunteer opportunity on here. Maybe you have a grant you’d like to get edited, or some research that needs to be done. You can get volunteers to do that here too.

5. Craigslist. You never know, right?

6. Local corporations. Many people working in corporations would love to volunteer for you. You can frame it as a team-building activity, and possibly get an in for employee giving campaigns if you do this.

7. High schools. Many high schools have a requirement to do 20 or more hours of service before they graduate. I know I had to do a lot of community service in a library before I could graduate.

8. Local universities. Tons of students are looking for real world experience in everything from graphic design and marketing to case management to environmental stewardship. Why not do a little outreach and see if you can get people interested in the volunteer opportunities you have available?

Thanks for reading! If there are any other places you can think of to find volunteers, I’d love to see your ideas in the comments!

How can you discover your strengths?

How do you manage people? Have you taken the Gallup assessment, which was given to over 2 million people, and provided insights on 34 types you might have to manage at work? This can be an invaluable tool as you help people discover their strengths, and focus on these in their work.

Ask these four questions to people you work with, and see how different everyone is, and how you can start to motivate different types of people.

1. What’s the best praise you ever received?
2. How often do you like to check in with your manager?
3. What’s your best method for building relationships?
4. How do you learn best?

Here is part two of how to manage the different types of people in your organization. If you haven’t read part one yet, you really should.

Managing Competitors
Use competitive language with this person. Talk about “outsmarting’ the competition. Measure them against other people. Set up contests. Find places where they can win. One of the best ways to manage this person is to hire another competitive person who produces more. When they lose, let them mourn, and then quickly move them into another opportunity to win.

Managing Connectedness people
This person will have social issues that they will defend strongly. Listen to them. Your acceptance of these issues will influence the depth of the relationship you can build with them. If they have a spiritual orientation or strong faith, your acknowledgment of and acceptance of this will let them become more comfortable with you. Encourage this person to build bridges with others in the company to show each person how they all rely on others.

Managing Context people
When you ask this person to do something, explain why it needs to happen. Get the background on colleagues in meetings before you sit down to business. Get this person to help others understand what has been done and the thinking behind what is currently being done. Get case studies to help illustrate his points, and highlight the key discovery from each anecdote, which can then possibly be turned into classes.

Managing Deliberators
This person can excel at negotiating contracts, a rigorous thinker that can help you see the pitfalls in your plan. Do not ask this person to greet or network for your organization, and do not ask them to make snap judgments. This person is a private person, and does not want to share the details of their life with you. Don’t take it personally. They are selective and do not want to move quickly from team to team.

Managing Developers
Developers help people around them succeed. They are excellent at mentoring and teaching classes. This person loves to recognize others for their genuine achievements. Often people under this person can be transferred quickly to positions of larger responsibility because they grow people and prepare them for the future. To make this person happy, tell them, “Your encouragement and confidence helped this person succeed.”

Managing Discipline people
This person can bring structure to chaos. They can also be annoyed by clutter. Tell this person the schedule. Don’t surprise them, but if there have to be surprises, help them develop routines to respond to surprises. This person can help you plan and organize your own work, and the work of others.

Managing Empathic people
This person needs to work with positive, optimistic people. Don’t overreact when they cry. They often feel things more keenly than others. Before getting this person to do something, ask them how they feel about the issue involved. Get this person to see their empathy as a gift, as it helps them understand others and sense what others are missing.

Managing Fairness people
Practical bent which means they will be more comfortable with getting tasks accomplished than long range planning. Most comfortable with predictable patterns, but also good around fairness for everyone. This person is good with establishing routines and consistent practices for your organization.

Managing Focusers
This person thrives on regular check-ins. Probably not sensitive to the feelings of others. New goals, and new measures of success are what this person pays attention to. They prefer to have an agenda for meetings. They like to talk about their goals and their progress towards those goals.

Managing Futurists
Put this person on the planning committee. They can see a brighter future around the corner. Stimulate them by talking about what could be. Have this person create a presentation to show the future to others. Give them time to think, write about and plan for products and services needed in the future.

Managing Harmony people
This person does not want conflict, they are NOT at their best when confronting others. Determine in what ways you agree with this person and regularly reinforce these agreements with them. Surround this person with others strong in harmony, and they will be more focused and more productive when they know they are supported. Don’t bother trying to discuss controversial subjects with them. They may not show you they disagree with you. Help this person find authoritative backup for actions they take.

Managing Ideation people
This person has creative ideas, and position them where their creativity will be valued. Especially as a designer, this person can shine. They thrive on new ideas, so try to feed them ideas that are within the scope of your mission. When decisions are made, take the time to show this person how each decision was rooted in the same theory or concept. They need to see the organization being coherent.

Managing Inclusiveness people
This person wants to make everyone feel like a part of the team. You can put this person in a donor or client-facing role and be certain that they can help break barriers between people. They like to work with products or projects made for everyone, not just one little subset of people.

Managing Individualization people
This person can judge a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses admirably. They can really see the world through the other person’s eyes, and can help you get the right roles for everyone according to their strengths and weaknesses.

Managing Input people
Put this person in a research role. They want all of the books, articles and papers you can throw at them. This person loves to be on the internet, gathering facts that may eventually be useful. They need a system for storing what they collect. And look for opportunities to say, “It’s amazing, you always seem to have the facts we need!”

Managing Intellection people
Encourage this person to take time to simply think. Have a detailed discussion with this person about their strengths, they will enjoy the introspection and self discovery. Challenge their thinking and they will enjoy that you are paying attention to them and will be stimulated by this.

Managing Learners
Position this person to continually learn about their fast changing field. They will enjoy the challenge of maintaining competency. Encourage this person to take courses at the local college or association. Help them track their progress by identifying milestones and celebrate these. Encourage this person to become the resident expert in a particular area. Have them work beside someone who will push them to learn more. And ask them to conduct presentations to teach others what they’ve learned, and secure financial support to continue their education.

Do you recognize ways you have tried to manage people here? Do you recognize ways people have tried to manage you here?

What works best on you?

What seems to work best on the people in your office?

Try to do one on one assessments of people you work with, and reward them in certain ways that seem consistent with their strengths. Do you notice an increase in productivity or a lift in mood?

On the 12th, we’ll finish talking about the different types and how to manage them in the workplace. Make notes when you find people that you know in here, and make notes on 5 different types you feel drawn to. How do you best like to be managed? This is going to help you figure out what works and what doesn’t.

Are you living on credit?

Are you making MUCH less than you deserve?

Do you wonder what you’re going to do about retirement? About your health if you get sick?

What if in this downturn, your nonprofit decides they can’t afford you anymore?

What’s your plan B or plan C?

You don’t HAVE ONE? Why not?

Now might be a good time to leverage your knowledge into profit.

Here’s how you start to get money on the side.

Figure out what you do best.

Do you love people? Hate them? Somewhere in between? What keeps you up at night about nonprofits? How does your personality mesh with your job? What do you see could be improved about the nonprofit world?

For example, since I like to write and meet people, I started a development consulting business in 2004, and ran it for several years. Then I went to work full time for nonprofits, but I also found some consulting clients to supplement my income. Now I’m back to consulting full time.

Read “Now, Discover Your Strengths” by Buckingham and Clifton. This book will help you build on your strengths, instead of focusing on and trying to “fix” your weaknesses. This can be frustrating, and you don’t have to do it all. Focus on what you do best.

How do you start consulting?

Look at this video by Yaro Starak, who is a pro blogger. He writes a lot about how to become a successful blogger and consultant.

Research and get to know your customers.

Don’t ask anyone’s permission. If you want to be a consultant, then you are one.

Make yourself a website, showcasing your skills. Here is a person who can help you do that.

How to find customers?

Ask people questions in person. Start to go to networking meetings, consultant meetups, chamber of commerce meetings, religious/spiritual meetings, and get out there and meet people in person. This is the best way to drum up new business. Ask for referrals.

The next best way would be to get on idealist.org and look at some small to mid-size nonprofits on there who don’t have fundraising staff, but who, you are sure, could use the help. Then call their executive director and ask them out to coffee to talk about what their biggest vision for their organization is. This is where you get a sense of if they recognize that they need fundraising help, and if they are willing to pay for it.

If they try to get you to work for free, thank them politely and tell them you have another engagement.

If they want to know how much you charge, figure out in advance how much you charge. Is it $18/hr? $25/hr? $100/hr? What do they get for that? And when do you expect payment?

If you try to work full time and then also 20 hours a week at another job, this is going to be difficult, so if there is a cyclical nature to when people need you, then figure this out in advance.

For instance, if you’re a fundraising/development consultant, and a client has an event, you know that if you’re organizing it/publicizing it, you need to allot more time for it, and take a vacation afterwards.

If you’re doing grant research and writing for them, this is easier to do in your spare time, at home.

Stay tuned for the next installment of how to make money on the side!

How many hours per day do you spend online?

How many minutes per day do you text?

How much time do you spend looking at a blinking screen?

Are you totally productive for all of this time, or is there some time when you’re just wasting time? How do you feel when you’re wasting time? Full of passion? Or full of boredom and sadness? What could you be doing instead?

Could you be making a call to a donor? Having tea with a nonprofit colleague? Tabling at an event for your nonprofit? Going out and making connections for your nonprofit in the community? Taking a walk to clear your head?

Seth Godin recently wrote about which electronic interruptions you allow into your life.

“That email, Facebook and message queue is a lot longer than it used to be. For some people, it’s now a hundred or even a thousand distinct social electronic interactions a day. It’s as if a genie is whispering in your ear, “I have an envelope, and it might contain really good or really bad news. Want to open it?”"

So if you want to take a digital detox, here’s how to start.

Get off of Facebook

Seriously, if you need me to list reasons,
1. This is not the way to fundraise, there are 100 better ways to get money for your nonprofit.
2. You don’t need to see your cousin’s 300 vacation pictures,
3. The like button has made “cause pages” obsolete, so people can’t become fans but only LIKE your nonprofit.
4. Oh, plus, you’re giving Facebook a license to whatever you put on there, in perpetuity. NY Times even did an article on the ridiculous size of FB’s privacy policy today. A word to the wise boys, bigger is not better when it comes to privacy policy. Ahem. There are other social networks where your nonprofit can have a face. Like Twitter. Or LinkedIn. Go for somewhere a little more grownup, that respects you and your privacy and your content a little more.

In short: What a waste of time. Even Betty White said so on Saturday Night Live!

Go for Inbox Zero.

That means all of the emails you’re currently saving because “You might need them someday,” no no girl, press that archive button or select all and press delete. You are not going to need them. Go through your flagged messages. Which emergencies already took care of themselves? Unflag, delete again! Messages from 2007? Unless it’s love letters, DELETE! Messages from 2008? DELETE! And don’t forget your sent box.
Also, there is a guy who writes more about why Inbox Zero is good.

Get clear for your goals for the day in the morning. Allow yourself to check email only after you have accomplished certain tasks.

You’ll be surprised at how much gets done. Thank you Tim Ferriss and David Allen.

I recommend doing a digital detox once a week.

Just take a break from everything. No email. No phone. No TV. No Video. No social networks. No screens of any kind.

Go to a poetry conference. Read a book in your bed. Take a bikeride with friends. Make some home-cooked meals. Write a letter. Go dancing. Paint a picture. Play your instrument. Do something completely selfish for yourself.

You’ll come back, refreshed, and ready to go. Tell your friends to shut their facebooks too, and come out to play with you.

I want to know what you want. Please tell me. Takes 5 mins. Tops.

Do you get to do things you like to do, when you volunteer? Or do you feel taken advantage of?

Ty, a nonprofit volunteer recently wrote a post complaining how he tries and tries to volunteer at nonprofits, but no one returns his phonecalls, or he knows a better way to do things, and nonprofits don’t appreciate that.

Here’s how it looks from the inside.

Nonprofits are completely strapped for cash and people to get the job done, but they also treat their employees very poorly. And there is no bonus waiting at the end of the tunnel, no new job to jump to within the organization. The volunteer coordinators get paid the same whether they have 10 volunteers or 100. So they have little incentive to call you back. People have been completely demotivated by the system.

When I ran my one person fundraising program, I got volunteers to come in, and if they didn’t want to fundraise, they didn’t have to. There was always research, graphic design, filing, or thank-you calls to do. Or they could suggest something that they would like to help with.

And I was grateful to them for whatever they could give. If they didn’t come in, I checked in on them. If they did show up, I paid attention to them, gave them cookies, or little tokens of appreciation. I always had a smile to make sure they knew I was glad they were there.

When I hired an intern, I asked them to read a checklist I had created so they could choose what they would like to do. That way, I could always give them tasks that they enjoyed.

I’ve been volunteering for the past six months, and it’s surprising how difficult it can be to get people to call you back, email you, or schedule you.

In the past six months, I’ve volunteered for a domestic violence shelter, for an arts in hospitals org, for a refugee shelter, and had a sort of 12 hour interview with an environmental nonprofit, (don’t know what that was, guess I’ll chalk it up to volunteering). I also tried to volunteer for the Austin Bat Cave.

The only place that got back to me in a timely fashion was the DV shelter, and that’s because I knew the coordinator personally.

The Austin Bat Cave was the worst. I really believe in their mission. I love that they want to help kids learn to write and read. I emailed, called, emailed, called, emailed, called, nothing. I eventually started googling board members and calling them. Then, one day, one of the board members finally got back to me. And the next day, finally, the Executive Director, *the sole employee* got back to me. Needless to say, I was pissed off, and did not help her out. And I was going to help her fundraise!

Volunteering is a waste of time when people don’t appreciate you. So create your own litmus test. If you don’t hear from them after the second phonecall, write them off.

They say that volunteering is a great way to meet people, to network, to gain experience for your resume. I think it’s true to some degree.

In some nonprofits, it is a way to save a nonprofit the trouble of hiring someone to do what you’re doing.

The worst volunteering opportunities are when nonprofits don’t care what your skillset is, they just want you to do something menial for them.

The best volunteering opportunities are the special events ones, because at least there you can meet people who are well connected and who could help you get a job, or connect you with resources that you could use.

What do you think? Have you had a good volunteering experience lately? Have you had a bad one? Inquiring minds want to know!

Last week, I bicycled through a graveyard. I feel it’s important to keep connected to graveyards, because that’s where you’re going to end up. So what are you doing with this one life? Ever thought about dying? What are you going to regret?

<img src="http://www.wildwomanfundraising.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/gravestone.jpg" alt="gravestone Are you a workaholic fundraiser?
Working even when you’re home and thinking about work even on vacation means you don’t have time for your own career, or your own personal life. Which is a terrible robbery, when you think how little time we have here. Do you really want to say, “I died after I raised over $2 Million and my boss gave himself a raise” or “I died after I’d visited 10 countries, learned how to play the violin, and found and stayed with my true love”?

Isn’t it time we said enough? Do you have to be close to a graveyard, reading the gravestones, to see that we are all here for a very short time, and often, much shorter than we plan? What are you going to do about working too much?

We are 350 times more productive than a worker in the 1950s. And yet, we seem to find more to fill our time with, and more and more is asked of us.

How Workaholism Hurts Your Development Career

More and more nonprofit employees are working more and more hours. Some believe they must put in the extra time in order to hang onto their development jobs, while others think that spending lots of time in the office spells success for their nonprofit. Unfortunately, the former are probably right—nonprofit bosses are trying to get you to work EVEN HARDER in order to meet unrealistic fundraising expectations.

I know that many nonprofit fundraisers are encouraged to be workaholics. It gets so bad that you can only talk about the money you’re raising, the people you’re working with, the events you’re doing.

Get a grip tomorrow when I reveal the next post on how to get out of a workaholic rut.

I just saw Amy Sample Ward a few days ago, lucky me, on her way from SXSW to London, and she handed me this wonderful book that she is a co-author of, called Social by Social.

So this morning I got up early, plunked down on the couch with a cup of tea and started reading Social by Social, a giant orange book. It was written in wiki format, so there are lots of ways you can go through the book. Here are some highlights you can use for your organization.

If you’ve ever said, What the heck, social media is so full of jargon, I don’t even know what to do, well, they’ve thought of that! Here’s a link to their jargon page.

The How-Tos part was incredibly useful.

It includes:
<a href="http://www.socialbysocial.com/book/become-a-digital-activist"">How to become a digital activist
How to find out what’s already been done by others
How to create a blog strategy
How to find and join conversations that are already happening
How to turn a film into a campaign
10 Search Engine Optimization tips
How to subscribe to an RSS feed
How to use Delicious.com
How to choose tags for your organization
How to use blogging to improve your search engine position
How to make and publish quick videos for the web
10 Search Engine Marketing Tips
How to make the most out of Google Adsense
How to publish a book
How to design a homepage
How to set up a virtual office
and more!

This book/wiki/resource is incredibly useful and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in broadening and deepening their knowledge of social media, or raising more money for their organization, or learning how to create a strategy to engage donors online.

Favorite quotes so far:

“The message is not about the charity, but about why the messenger cares.” -Katya Anderson

“Don’t tell me, show me.”

“A public sector that does not create platforms for its citizens to create solutions for themselves, together, will soon start to seem old, outdated and tired. It will also be far less productive and effective in creating public goods. The future of public services rests on their becoming platforms for participation and collaborations, mobilizing citizens as player-developers in creating public goods.” -Charles Leadbeater, author, We-Think.

There were also a couple of good sites that I enjoyed, such as The Nag. As I’ve heard fundraisers being described as professional nags, this appealed to me. They just redesigned their website, but they HAD an adorable interface, you can still see a screenshot if you go to the link above. This new one is simple and okay… Their tagline is still my favorite: “Changing the world one lazy-assed mouse click at a time.”

Be Able to Motivate
This is the number one thing. If you can do this, you can overcome bandwidth issues, and other organizational issues. It means more than just being nice. It means be able to give some people a reason to try harder for you.

Last week I went to the RISE AUSTIN conference for entrepreneurs. It’s a free annual conference to help people get a leg up on starting and running their businesses. I found it extraordinarily helpful and could not recommend it highly enough. If you are an entrepreneur, or thinking of becoming one, I would suggest traveling to Austin just for this conference.

Here’s what Ann Webb of Skin Organics told us about how to start and run a million dollar business.

Be Able to Motivate
This is the number one thing. If you can do this, you can overcome bandwidth issues, and other organizational issues. It means more than just being nice. It means be able to give people a reason to try harder for you. If you’re motivating volunteers or staff, talk about the appreciation luncheon you’re going to have at the end of the month, with prizes for most improved, most dedicated, and most helpful volunteers. Get pizza for that phone-a-thon. Make cookies for that Monday when nobody wants to be there. Even allow people to see return on their investment through giving them a LinkedIn recommendation that same week. It will look good for future employers to see, and it will show them that doing good pays in potentially higher salaries.

Search for your niche
When finding out who you can partner with in your city, ask, What do you need? What are you looking for? When they want something, you need to be able to give it to them. If they want to partner on an event, find a way to make it happen. If they want to partner when going for advertising in a newspaper or billboard, see who you all know that you can get to help pay for that.

Lower your overhead
You don’t need a huge office for your nonprofit. If you see clients in the community, see if you can meet in a library or community center. If your development office is cramped, see if you can meet major donors in coffeeshops. Show them your programs, but also use other people’s space to your advantage.

Charge your customers half and pay your people double.
This is a very important lesson for nonprofit leaders to learn. Give great salaries to everyone in your organization. This will make them want to work for you. Think of paying your Development Director $60K, your Development Associate/Assistant $40K. They will want to stay with your organization, even if they are working long hours, because of the good salary. If you do fee for service do not charge clients more than you have to.
